I’ve worked with some of the biggest brands on the planet as a strategy consultant, and I’ve taken on critically sensitive projects for all size and profile of organization. I am in some cases contractually obligated and in other cases ethically bound not to publicly promote myself with many of the products of this work.
Here’s an anonymized example: Narrative shifting has been my work for more than a decade. In 2020, I supported a Fortune 500 SaaS company in establishing a new global policy that changed their terms of service and fundamentally altered their value proposition to customers, from “free forever,” to “free up to X amount, and then paid.” We knew this policy shift was going to be unpopular, and we’d developed a thick portfolio of research around how it might go wrong, up to and including the potential to force a reversal in the decision because of public outcry and bad press. Using that research as a background, we then developed a strategy to tell a powerful, honest story to users about the need for the change, leading to an extremely low rate of complaint or pushback once the final change was communicated. Our framing told a relatable story about the way technology had changed everything, including this massive company’s outlook and capability. We made this software company a deeply understandable, humanized partner whose past support was appreciated, but who needed to change to meet the moment. The policy change was successful, never needed to be reconsidered, did not lead to the anticipated PR crisis, and solved the software company’s growing usage problem by capping a formerly-free service at a sustainable level.
